Let’s talk about the importance of self-care

I have been thinking a lot about self-care lately. I have always tried to find time for myself in some way. I have a need to re-charge, and I tend to do this with quiet time alone either reading, walking or being in my pool. Being on my porch is a great place for me to recharge. Another aspect of self-care for me is to begin a day by centering myself. Starting a day with a connection with a higher power, asking for assistance in the day from my angels, helps align my energy in a positive way.

I always want to be genuine and honest as an acupuncturist and as a person. If I am going to be honest, I find that my practices are improving, and I am doing this more and more on a regular basis. Am I successful daily? Probably not. But I am finding that as I am enjoying doing this and I am doing it much more regularly.

This is so true with everything. I have been up and down with weight my whole life. I diet successfully and then I am back to old habits and the weight creeps back on. I am presently in a good place and am eating healthy and losing weight. It is slow but steady and I am enjoying eating whole foods, enjoying healthy carbs and generally not being afraid to eat. This is so liberating! I have learned that I actually am enjoying my exercise routine! Once again to be honest, this is a work in progress. But I like the changes I am creating. I give myself credit for the positive days and forgive myself when I am a bit off.

And that is important. As we grow and change, we need to be kind to ourselves. Recognize the successes. Pat yourself on the back! And forgive yourself when you get off track.

So often I hear a person say they do not have time for exercise or healthy eating or whatever positive change one can make in one’s life. And yes, I have certainly been guilty of that as well. I think sometimes it gets overwhelming. There are many rules and opinions out there. Positive changes come in small increments. There is an amazing amount of busyness and the need to do in our culture.  Take five minutes a day to get off the track. Stop talking, stop doing, be aware of your surroundings. Sit by the water and just observe. Be calm. I am rather certain, if you feel calmness you will want to re-create that feeling. It will build. Everyone can find the time for self- care.

Finally, there are no rules. What works for one person may not work for another. Not everyone needs to do yoga. Not everyone needs to think water is calming. But find what works for you. It will make an amazing difference in your life and health.
